About Us » Shared Decision Making
The Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Shared Decision Making (SDM) Team began in 1994 under Part 100.11 of the educational law that developed a plan for the participation of teachers, parents, administrators and school board members in school-based planning and shared decision making. In creating the Shared Decision Making Team and process, the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES adopted a philosophy incorporating the following principles as it moved forward: - A basic belief in that continuous improvement in student achievement can be guaranteed when educational decisions are made by those most informed, most affected by, and most involved in the implementation of the instructional activity.
- Issues that may affect the educational progress of students are legitimate subjects for the SDM process
- SDM will involve in the process those involved for implementation, those providing the service, those supporting the service, and those impacted by the service.
- The goal of SDM is improvement of student achievement.
- Members of the decision-making process are accountable for their decisions. It is understood that decisions will be based upon accurate data acquired through benchmarking, experts and internal data collection.
- SDM, if properly implemented, will result in decisions that will be beneficial and acceptable to all.
With those beliefs and principles as a foundation, Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES developed SDM with the creation of a team representing the BOCES district and three SDM core teams- Special Education, Continuing Education and Tech and Career Education. Each core team has it’s own specific responsibilities and joins the District Shared Decision Making Team in this important process.
