Career and Technical Education

What is Career and Technical Education?

Career and Technical Education programs provide juniors and seniors an opportunity to achieve technical, career and academic skills. We offer programming by maintaining strong partnerships with the business community, achieving national certifications and focusing on school improvement through the "High Schools That Work" national model and the New York State Education Department's Program Approval process.

The programs can be a springboard to college success or direct entry into employment. Students can receive a technical endorsement on their high school diploma if they pass an industry-developed technical assessment and complete a technical and career program approved by New York State.

How To Enroll

High school students learn about technical and career programs through their school district’s Guidance Office.

Interested sophomore students have an opportunity to hear informational presentations by the Technical and Career Center staff or will be able to visit one of the centers and spend time in their program of choice.

Students are sponsored and registered for technical and career programs by their home school district. In addition, students desiring to attend a New Vision program must complete an application and be accepted in order to participate.

Can I Earn College Credit?

Most Career and Technical programs have developed articulation agreements with post secondary institutions. In addition, many programs offer Gemini and/or dual credit opportunities through agreements with local community colleges.

Student Organizations

Students have an opportunity to participate in the student leadership organization Skills USA. Students are able to enter skills competitions, take part in social and fund raising events, seek and hold elective offices, serve on advisory councils, and participate in workshops and conferences. They develop leadership, citizenship and workplace skills.

Through the National Technical Honor Society students are encouraged and recognized for their scholastic excellence, service and student leadership. To qualify, a student must maintain a 90% average in their technical and career program, receive the endorsement of the technical and career instructor and principal, have excellent attendance and be in good standing at their home school district.

Student Support Services

All students will have the opportunity for a work-based learning experience. This may include shadowing, a short or long-term internship or a Capstone Program that allows students, in their senior year, to be placed with a place of business for a portion of their programming. In addition, we offer placement services to current students and past graduates by maintaining a job bank of current openings and in providing assistance in composing resumes and job applications.

Each center has a School Counselor to assist students with career planning and program issues.

Academic support is available for any student when requested by the home school district staff. Students may receive academic credit for English 12, or the third credit of math or science (non-Regents level courses). Academic teachers are available at both technical centers for extra help sessions in each of these areas.
