Center for Experiential Learning

Education is not preparation for life,
education is life itself.

~ John Dewey, Educational Philosopher

Alternative Education at The Center For Experiential Learning
Welcome to the Alternative Education web page! The Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Alternative Education Program utilizes an experiential education model, this program aims to re-involve students in the educational process in a new setting with a different approach. Students are encouraged to take charge of their own learning with the assistance of our dedicated staff.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Alternative High School is to establish a community that addresses the diverse needs of our students and provides a supportive environment which fosters individual development, academic achievement and community involvement.

Our High School Program
The Center for Experiential Learning is an high school designed to meet the educational and social-emotional needs of students within grades 9 through 12 who are considered to be “at-risk” for dropping out of high school using an alternative education philosophy and model.

Many students enrolled at the Center for Experiential Learning have met with either academic and/or social difficulties. Each student in the program possesses a strong desire to earn a Regents Diploma.

Exceeding Standards
The curriculum at the Center for Experiential Learning is grounded in the New York State Learning Standards. We emphasize a project-based education, in which students learn by actively engaging in learning, thinking and problem solving. We teach students both within the classroom and within their local environment and surrounding communities. For juniors and seniors, Technical and Career Education opportunities are also available.

At the Center for Experiential Learning, we create and develop individual learning plans for each student. We work in collaboration with parents and with local school districts to ensure that our programs of study meet and exceeds high standards.

Learning Opportunities
We offer students increased individual attention by offering reduced class sizes, and by working to establish positive relationships with students and their families.
