What is Technical and Career Education?
Technical and Career programs provide junior and senior students from the 25 school districts in our region an opportunity to achieve high level technical and career skills as well as high level academic skills. We continue to offer relevant programming by maintaining strong partnerships with the business community, achieving national certifications, and focusing on school improvement through the High Schools That Work national model and the New York State Education Department's Program Approval process.
Students, who attend primarily for two years, have the opportunity to complete a technical and career program the can be a springboard to college success or to direct entry into employment. A small number of programs serve seniors only and are completed in one year. Students can receive a technical endorsement on their high school diploma if they pass an industry developed technical assessment and successfully complete a technical and career program that has been approved by New York State.

How do I Enroll?
High school students learn about technical and career programs through their school district’s Guidance Office. All interested sophomore students have an opportunity to hear informational presentations by the Technical and Career Center staff or will be able to visit one of the centers and spend time in their program of choice. Students are sponsored and registered for technical and career programs by their home school district. In addition, students desiring to attend a New Vision program must complete an application and be accepted in order to participate.
What Kind of Student Services are Available?
Student Organizations
Students have an opportunity to participate in student leadership organizations: Skills USA and HOSA. Students are able to enter skills competitions, take part in social and fund raising events, seek and hold elective offices, serve on advisory councils, and participate in workshops and conferences. They develop leadership, citizenship and workplace skills.
Through the National Technical Honor Society students are encouraged and recognized for their scholastic excellence, service and student leadership. To qualify, a student must maintain a 90% average in their technical and career program, receive the endorsement of the technical and career instructor and principal, have excellent attendance and be in good standing at their home school district.
Student Support Services
All students will have the opportunity for a work-based learning experience. This may include shadowing, a short or long-term internship or a Capstone Program that allows students, in their senior year, to be placed with a place of business for a portion of their programming. In addition, we offer placement services to current students and past graduates by maintaining a job bank of current openings and in providing assistance in composing resumes and job applications.
Students may participate in a “vocational assessment” to help them develop their career plan or to help them decide upon an appropriate Technical and Career program.
Each center has a Guidance Counselor to assist students with career planning and program issues. For students with disabilities, Resource Coordinators are available for additional support.
Academic support is available for any student when requested by the home school district staff. Students may receive academic credit for English 12, or the third credit of math or science. Academic teachers are available at both technical centers for extra help sessions in each of these areas.
Can I Receive College Credit?
Each Technical and Career Program has developed articulation agreements with relevant post secondary institutions. Some programs offer dual credit opportunities while others offer Gemini credit at the local community college.
